Paul: Looking for Grandmother and Family - Vlasich
I am in America. My grandmother came from Grosswarasdorf (Hungary)/ Austria ~ 1908. I have chuch records from the town of her brother's marriage. This lists the parents and grandparents - which is great.

I cannot locate her ship and immigration records in New York, or in regonal sites in Chicago or Boston.

My Grandmother's brother Johann, lived in Grosswarasdorf all his life, married Viktoria and had three children: Stephen, Rudolph and Irma. Their grandchildren (from Rudolf), Gerhard, Rudolf, and Werner still live in the area.

Any other information that could be provided would be appreciated.

If she came thru Ellis Island than her manifest should be there. Do you have this website to locate an EI manifest in One Step : www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/ellis.html
It is possible that she came thru Baltimore, Boston or Philadelphia.

pmosteika: Re: Looking for Grandmother and Family - Vlasich
Hi Julia,

I responded to your message but I do not see it posted. Let me try again:

Oh, Theresa Behof and John Satter mean nothing at this point.

However, do these names mean anything?

I learned some information about a cousin on our two visits to Austria with Elizabeth and Rudolf Vlasich. Elizabeth had a letter, form which I copied the address. Apparently Anna Krayner (Vlasich’s) cousin had a daughter Lorainne Szusich, who married (Earnest) Thielberg. They had three daughters who are living in Itasca, Illinois. Earnest died of lung cancer.

<>Ms. Lorainne Thielberg (maiden Szucsich)

Szucsich was Magdelena's maiden name. Magdalena was married to Lorenz Vlasich, who are the Grandparents of Anna Krayner (Vlasich), my Great-great Grandparents. Magdalena and Lorenz had a son named Lorenz Vlasich, who married Rosalia (maiden name Behofsits), who are Anna Krayner (Vlasich)’s parents, my Great-grandparents

Betty Behof
"Also, we have a Behof, Betty in Chicago that was keeping in touch

with my mother. Her address is ...

Grandma Anna's (Krayner, maiden Vlasich) father, Lorenz Vlasich, married Rosalia (maiden name Behofsits, spelling from Church in Grosswarasdorf... trusted 08.February 1888), - our Great-grandparents. Rosalia's parents name is listed differently in the Grosswarasdorf Chuch records (... trusted 08.February 1888); Thomas Beofsits and Agnes (maiden Kuzmits), our Great-great-grandparents.
<>Betty Behof is probably a descendent of Uncle John Behof. John Behof is Rosalia's brother. John's the guy that came to America and sponsored Grandma Anna Krayner (Vlasich)'s and Aunt Julia Vlasich's trip/immagration to the U.S. My notes say that John Behof had 13 children. He was born in 1879, and died at 98 in 1977. <>

It's my understanding that it was the Behof's that originally owned the house in Grosswarasdorf where Anna and Julia were born (and I visited). I also have notes that John Behof and family own the famous Vienna (or Bohemian) Restaurant, downtown Chicago. I think it was on Canal... up toward Lake. ... I want to visit there. I must mail Betty.

I did try to correspond with these people... with no luck. But I need to research this again.

pmosteika: Re: Looking for Grandmother and Family - Vlasich
Hello Julia, (This is what I ment topost as a reply)

This is great news!

My great Aunt was Aunt Julia who married John Florsch . I used to visit their farm in Wisconsin, and their daughter, my cousin Nanette would give me rides on her horse. I surprised Nan hasn't mentioned me. I sent her a copy of my Family book years ago, visted her in Wisonsin, and I got to see my Aunt Julia just before she died (after many years).

I am Paul Mosteika from Chicago, now living in New Hampshire, son of Maria Mosteika (Maiden Name - Krayner) and Phil Mosteika who were born in Chicago to Anna Krayner (Maiden Name - Vlasich) and Joseph Krayer. Joseph (I believe) came from Gratz, and Anna emmigrated from Grosswarasdorf, Austria when she was 18 or 19, approximately 1907.

Here is a clip about your great Aunt from my document:

Anna Vlasich was born January 26, 1889 in Grosswarasdorf , Hungary, (now Austria).

Anna came to N.Y. when she was 18, the year would be 1907. Anna died at age 89 in a hospital on the North side of Chicago February 26, 1978. She was laid to rest on March 1st, 1978 at St. Joseph Cemetary in River Grove, Illinois, lot 225 BI. 2, Section V.

Her Death Certificate, State File Number 604911, agrees with Anna’s birthday and date of death, and this also agrees with her birth date listed on the 1920 Census. The signing physician, Luis Mella, M.D., certifies the death on February 26, 1978 at 12:35 a.m. at Augustana Hospital & Health Care Center, 411 W. Dickens, Chicago, Illinois 60614, of acute congestive heart failure and arteriosclerotic heart disease. The congestive heart disease is listed as ‘ interval between onset and death,’ two weeks. While the arteriosclerotic heart disease is listed as her having it for years. Other interesting facts listed are:

· Origin or Descent - Croation

· Social Security number 326-30-0407

· Citizen of U.S.A.

· Residence 4835 W. Winnemac Chicago, Illinois

· Father - Lawrence Walsich

· Mother - Rosalee Valsich

And... another clip:

Rosalia and Lorenz (Lawrence) Vlasich (Maria’s Maternal Grandparents)

Anna’s Mother Rosalia, (maiden name Behoff [1]), married Lawrence (Lorenz) Vlasich of Grosswarasdorf, Austria. My notes are lacking details.

Rosalia Behoff died 1916 [2], according to notes from their daughter Julia, (my original note said 1902, but it was scratched out). Another note simply indicates “Chicago.” But this could not apply to Rosalia or Lawrence, because they lived their whole life in Grosswarsdorf, Austria. Apparently this Chicago note applies to John Behoff, Rosalia’s brother.

Lorenz Vlasich lived with his wife Rosalia in Grosswarasdorf 63, Grosswarasdorf, Austria. That house was the same house that Anna and Julia were born in. The house was originally owned by Behof (Behofsich), and Lorenz was the first Vlasich to live there, according to notes from our visit in August 2000.

[1] This spelling is from notes from my mother. It differs from the records provided by the Grosswarasdorf church, January 2001.

[2] Note that this date was reconciled later to be 1914, from a Grosswarasdorf chuch record.

I also met Viktoria, seen the house where your Grandmother Aunt Julia (and my Gram - Anna) were born, met the family and received some old church records. I will gladly share all I have.

You seem to have some facts that I don't know. For example,

" a sister marta- brother rudolph her fathers second marriage "

But they confuse me. Also, Bermen was probaby Bremen. Note that Viktoria and Johann Vlasich had three children (I met Rudi and his wife Elizabeth before they died):

Johann and Victoria have three children: sons Stephen (oldest) and Rudolph (2nd child), and a daughter Irma. They also had three other children that died at a very early age. Johann and Victoria lived there at Grosswarasdorf 63, (the same house Anna Vlasich lived in).

But, we can share much more information. Please contact me, dropping the "_gene" portion of my mail address. I can send you a Word document. Nanette also knows my mail address at work.

Thanks,

Paul

Yes thank you. I responded to your mail , but, I'm not sure that you received it. I do not see it posted.

But, I will try again. I'm sure it's a spelling problem, or something like that. 'V' was pronounced like 'W' and so on. Already I've seen about 5 different ways that our family records (via other agencies), show Vlasich spelled.

Thanks again for the URL's.

NAN DID MENTION YOU and FAMILY HISTORY-
BUT I NEVER DID GET TO SEE A BOOK

* YESTERDAY NANs brother was having triple by-pass surgery.

pmosteika: Family of Vlasich - Szucsich and Behofsits - Kuzmits
Hi Julie,

Thanks for the wealth of information!

No, you hang onto those names. They surely will mean something. Every little piece is a clue. Many times they don't fit together and then, when a typo or error (in memory or spelling) is found, or a relation that was incorrectly drawn is discovered, then they do fit together like magic.

Obviously Behof(sits), and Kuzmits I do recognize. John Sattler I do not recognize. From what you posted of the ships records, maybe they were just traveling together, mere acquaintances.

And you did much better than I with the ships records. I could not locate Julia or her sister Anna (~1907). I visited Ellis Island recently in fact. I also researched the National Archives (NARA) Regional facilities in Chicago and NY for Anna - and found nothing. Actually, I did find 1920 Census records and Death certificates. But, I must have been doing something wrong, as I did not locate my Great Aunt Julia's ship either. So thank you for that.

Yes I can send you my document (~ 30 pages). Please contact me directly using the Email address paul_gene -k-u-k-a-c- mosteika -p-o-n-t- com but leaving out (omit) the "_gene" portion of the Email address. I do that to limit SPAM Email. Also, Nanette knows my work Email address @hp.com

I also just received a Behof family tree from a Behof relative. They contacted me directly after I "googled" the name Behof and sent a Real-Estate agent a memo. I can also send that. It is quite extensive.

I met John only a few times in my life - on Aunt Julia and Uncle John's farm, then, when I visited Nan and Aunt Julia in March, 2001 with my Aunt Babe. I'm sorry to hear about John. Wow a tripple-bypass! I sent mail to Nanette recently. Now I know why she hasn't responded.

Thanks again, and send me mail.

Hi,

Excuse me for my ignorance, but, is "( Szabadbáránd )" how you say Grosswarasdorf in Hungarian? Now remember, be kind, you are talking to an American born, Austrian-Hungarian, Lithuanian . . . Would I pronounce that Za-bad-bay-raynd?

Your roots are in "Horvátzsidány (Hrvatski Zidan). This Villige is now in Hungary 20 Km-s To Grosswarasdorf, but Gwd. is now Austria."

How cool!

Well, 20 Km South is not that far away! I'm not sure what Gwd. is, but, I can guess. I am thousands of miles away. But, you are only about 12.4 miles away from Grosswarasdorf. If you go there or to the Church, you will see the records and the people from the Vlasich family. The last address I have is:

Rudolph Vlasich (Barber, 2nd son of Johann and Victoria Vlasich) and wife Elizabeth
Parkgasse 44 (Old address was Grosswarasdorf 63)
Grosswarasdorf, Austria
Telephone 43 - 2614-2262

Now Rudolf and his wife have passed away since we visited them (in 1995 and again in 2000), but, their sons: Gerhard (eldest), Rudolf, and Werner (youngest), should still be around.

Maybe they are a relation to you? If so, I can provide some details of what I know (not much, but something).

Good luck,

Paul

On this interactive map you can see both places, Gwd (with Hung. name also) is just north across the border, chose Horvátzsidány from the alphabetical list:
http://lazarus.elte.hu/moterkep/mb.htm
I would say the Hung. letter "á" (Alt 160 with right num. keys) is a shortend i sound, like Itálian Pástá, or the Sp. Básta, Hásta or Sálsa. The "a" is like in fall: Zabadbirind.
